Psychology- scientific study of behavior and mental processes. Behavior- outward or overt actions and reactions: proactive vs reactive. Mental processes- internal, covert activity of our minds. Theory: general explanation of a set of observations or facts: prediction. Wundt"s psychology lab: germany in 1879, developed technique of objective introspection: the process of objectively examining and measuring one"s thoughts and mental activities. Structuralism: focused on the structure or basic elements of the mind, every experience could be broken down into its individual emotions and sensations , edward titchener- wundt"s student; brought structuralism to america, died out in the early 1900s. Functionalism- how the mind allows people to adapt, live, work, and play: william james proposed it, influenced the modern fields of education, evolutionary, and industrial/organization psychology. Wednesday, january 18, 2017: gestalt - an organized whole psychology / study of patterns of behavior as opposed to studying small pieces of them. Gestalt ideas are now part of the study of cognitive psychology.
