Document Summary
Jews: no logical competitor exists, blame falls on a less powerful out-group. Institutionalized prejudice- prejudicial attitudes that are held by the majority of people living in a society where stereotypes and discrimination are the norm. Can be blatant, or more subtle (slide 10: normative conformity- people adopt prejudicial attitudes and discriminatory behavior to go along with the group and gain acceptance. Illustrated by changing social norms: just world theory (blaming the victim)- tendency to believe that the world is just, so people get what they deserve and deserve what they get. Social psychology: stereotypes- a generalization about a group of people in which identical characteristics are assigned to virtually all members of the group, regardless of actual variation among the members. Makes the world easier to think about (cognitive miser): social identity theory- we categorize ourselves and others into groups. We sort the world into groups that we belong to (in-groups) and groups that we do not belong with (out-groups).
