SPHR 2104W Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Neurofilament, Dementia, Pronoun
Document Summary
Memory language functions most affected in dementia. Less than 15% of elderly experience dementia. Degenerative: progresses into a more severe form. Deficit in memory, problem solving ,neuromuscular control. Neurofilament are tangled/twisted, plaques: damage to hippocampus and cortex. Drug therapy can help but no cure. All intellectual functions are severely impaired and almost all reside in. Always reassess because it"s a progressive disorder. Maintaining individual"s function at highest level possible. Emphasize remaining skills and compensate for deficits. Damage in motor cortex, basal ganglia(subcortical nuclei: extrapyramidal system), cerebellum. Affects motor planning, motor programming, coordination, timing, execution of movement patterns. Problem in execution, not due to muscle weakness. Difficulty distinguish between cas and severe articulation/phonology disorder. Damage to frontal lobe or specific area. Increased stress and speaking rate dont see increased errors. Affects rate, range of motion, directional motion, weak articulatory contacts, poor timing. Damage to lower motor neuros or mtoor unit isefl.
