SPHR 2108 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Bone-Anchored Hearing Aid, Auditory Brainstem Implant, Cochlear Implant
Hearing Aids, Assistive and Implantable Devices
• Lyric:
o Disposable deep fitting HA inserted about 4mm from ™ by ENT
o Advantage:
▪ 24 hours operation
▪ Hassle free
▪ Invisible
▪ Ease with phones
• troubleshooting/common problems
o Acoustic feedback
o Cord and tubes
o Batteries
o Wax in aid/mold
o T-coil left on
• Assistive Listening Devices
o Problem area
▪ Telephone
▪ Warning
▪ Small group
▪ Large group
o Type
▪ Acoustic
▪ Induction
▪ Infrared
▪ FM
• Implantable
o Bone anchored hearing aid (BAHA)
▪ Bc vibration
▪ Conductive mechanism damage:single sided deafness
o Middle ear implantable hearing devices
▪ Vibrate ossicles
▪ Moderate to severe HL
▪ Circumvent some problems with HA
o Cochlear implant
▪ Electrical stimulation of NVII in cochlea
▪ Severe to profound hearing loss
▪ Surgically implanted device for adults and children
▪ Electrical impulses are sent to brain by way of auditory nerve and
damaged part of ear is bypassed
▪ External parts:microphone, speech processor, transmitting coil
▪ Internal parts: internal receiver, electrode array
▪ Process
• Sound in environment is pick up by microphone, changed to an
electrical signal and sent to speech processor
• Speech processor changes signal into digital information
• Transmitted coil sends digital signal to headpiece
• receiver/stimulator sends signal to electrode array which are sent
to hearing nerve
• Impulses from hearing nerve are sent to the brain and perceived
as sound
o Auditory brainstem implant (ABI)
