SPHR 2108 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Audiometry, Otitis Media, Audiology
Pediatric Audiology and Early Intervention
What is pediatric audiology?
❖ Universal Newborn Hearing Screening
➢ It starts with the early identification of children with hearing loss (congenital and acquired)
➢ In 1989 only 3% had hearing tested. In 2012, 97% had hearing tested.
➢ Use non-behavioral methods like OAE & ABR
❖ The Importance of Screening/Who gets rescreened?
➢ Children who fail the newborn hearing screening
➢ Parents concern (70% of hearing loss found in children)
➢ Risk factors
■ Rescreen
❖ EHDI
➢ 1-3-6 Rule
❖ School Age
Pediatric screening tools
Non- Behavioral/ Objective
❖ Otoscopy
❖ Tympanometry
❖ Auditory Brainstem Response
❖ Otoacoustic Emissions
Pediatric screening tools cont.
Behavioral/ Subjective
❖ Conditioned Play Audiometry
❖ Visual Reinforcement Audiometry
❖ Tangible Reinforcement Operant Conditioning Audiometry
❖ Conditioned Orientation Reflex
❖ Conventional Screening Audiometry
Disorders that can cause pediatric hearing loss
Disorders cont.
❖ Congenital hearing loss
➢ Pendred syndrome
■ enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA)
■ abnormally shaped cochlea
➢ Usher syndrome
■ Abnormal development of hair cells
Disorders cont.
➢ Hunter syndrome
■ Skeletal abnormalities
■ Recurrent otitis media
➢ Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease

Document Summary
It starts with the early identification of children with hearing loss (congenital and acquired) In 1989 only 3% had hearing tested. Use non-behavioral methods like oae & abr. Children who fail the newborn hearing screening. Parents concern (70% of hearing loss found in children) Loud noises from toys & listening devices. Early intervention services are for children ages birth to 3:0 or 5:0 with developmental delays or disorders provided through the individuals with disabilities education act (idea) part c. To enhance the development of infants and toddlers with disabilities, to minimize their potential for developmental delay, and to recognize the significant brain development that occurs during a child"s first 3 years of life (idea, 2004) Client"s families create individual family service plan (ifsp) with assistance of clinicians (slps, ots, pts, social workers, nurses) Early hearing detection and intervention services (ehdi) refers to the practice of screening newborns for hearing loss and finding proper ei services if loss is detected.
