Document Summary
Democracy seemed to be confined to a few countries in the industrial west. Most developing countries too poor to become democracies. Leading social science theories of post-war period, all agree that third world countries have no democratic future --> they were all wrong. 1990"s dictatorships collapse in africa and former soviet union. 1980: 40 - 90 % democracies in the world. Democracies emerge all over, in countries without all the characteristics that experts thought were necessary for democracy. End of the cold war created favorable environment for democracy. Sam huntington: several ways in which international environment can shape regime outcomes. Major international event that affects regimes across the world (wwii) Soviet union used threat of military force to bring communism to eastern europe. The tying of external support to democratic behavior. "if you want continued economic aid, you need to respect human rights and hold elections" etc .
