PSY 012 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Child Protective Services, Psychological Abuse, Body Odor
Document Summary
There is not a set of definitions for neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, or psychological maltreatment that s used consistently by local, state, and federal agencies or across the multiple disciplines that deal with this problem. Federal cannot dictate how to define abuse and neglect. Assessments done in the guidelines given by the state law it changes by state, ex: domestic violence in nassau county, someone is arrested. Incidents are the number of reports always lower than prevalence. Prevalence is the total number of people at a period of time. Hard to define emotional abuse, hard for cps (child protective services) to follow up with the case: difficulty with the definitions and limited person, power, and resources. 1 in 10 kids were victim of child abuse. Psychological neglect the consistent failure of a parent or caretaker to provide a child with appropriate support, attention, and affection omission.
