The roots of psychological problems involve unconscious motives and conflicts that can be traced back to childhood. Treatment: help people gain insight into, and resolve, dynamic struggles or conflicts within then unconscious mind, free the ego from defensive behavior. Free association expressing whatever thoughts come to mind, you just talk until eventually the unconscious stuff comes out, therapists ask a lot of questions about the meaning behind the actions. Latent content: symbolism of the dream material pointing to unconscious content, ex: nails. Transference: reenactment of childhood relationships in the therapeutic relationship, ex: treating your therapist like daddy. Countertransference the therapist transferring their underlying feelings onto the patient, ex: therapist who could not take alcoholic women seriously because his mom was an alcoholic. Behavioral/learning based theory focuses on the role of learning in explaining both normal and abnormal behaviors. Systematically apply the principles of learning to the treatment of psychological disorders. Focus on changing current behavior not on the past.
