PSY 177 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Pindolol, Reuptake, Thiamine
Document Summary
Pharmacodynamics what the drug does to the body. Pharmacokinetics what the body does to the drug. The effects of a drug depend on its site of action and dose. The amount of drug that is bioavailable (able to have an effect) free to act on the target varies with route of administration. Differs in how you take the drug, ex: if you take an oral medication, it is going to take longer than iv medication. Duration of a drug"s effect is determined by how it is metabolized. Ingestion slow to moderate, sometimes you want it to last longer, like pain relievers. Inhalation moderate to fast, closer to the brain and not going through a digestive process like ingestion. Central injection fast to very fast. Differences in the duration of drug effect by administration. The longer the drug is in the blood the longer its effect. Drugs can enhance or interfere with each stage of neural communication and synaptic transmission.
