Stereotypes: organized sets of belief about any group of people. Experiment where people are assigned to arbitrary groups and perform tasks based on group membership. Tendency to perceive out-group members alike, and those in the group as distinct. Prejudice: negative feeling towards people based on their membership in a group. Realistic conflict theory: out-group hostility caused by competition for limited resources. Social identity theory people favour in-groups over out-groups in order to enhance self-esteem. Both can cause discrimination (negative behaviour against people b/c of their membership in a group) Blue eyed people became bossy, arrogant and brown eyed people. Stereotypes, categorization and heuristics all cognitive ways for storing info. became sensitive and timid. Self-concept made of both personal (individual characteristics, self- descriptions) and social identity (groups a person belongs to) More strongly identified in group, greater in-group bias. Forming groups in-group bias; advantage > overall success. Majority member become aware of discrepancy b/w intentions and behaviour.
