PSYC 050 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Francis Crick, Retina, Myelin
Document Summary
Francis crick described the astonishing hypothesis- your joys/sorrows, memories, ambitions, sense of personal identity and free will are no more than the behavior of a vast assembly of nerve cells and their associated molecules. Dualism is found in every religion and most philosophies. He said no. he said non-human animals, but not people. We possess physical bodies but what we are isn"t physical. We are immaterial souls that reside in physical bodies. the mind is immaterial. Descartes saw machines responded in certain ways to certain actions. humans are not limited to reflexive action. we can coordinate and be spontaneous. The second argument came about using method of doubt. I believe theres a god but i cant be sure. I believe i have friends and family, but maybe ive been tricked. Maybe everything we experience isn"t real. could doubt you have a body. One thing he concluded he cant doubt is that he is thinking.
