Document Summary

Dna replication occurs in s phase of interphase. Dna rep is critically important for the development of an organism and for maintenance of certain tissues. When cell divides it needs accurate copy of its dna so the new daughter cell can inherit dna. Both strands of dna molecule need to be copied. Replication precedes (copies it) in a 5" to 3" direction. Polymerase sits at 3" end and moves toward 5" end so then the new strand will be in. Both strands will be copies at the same time. Replication is initiated at regions of the dna called origins of replication. In eukaryotes many origins of replication exist on each chromosome. Replication occurs in both directions of the origin. In order to replicate the dna it needs to be unwound from around the nucleas. After the dna is replicated, the nucleosomes are replaced. Once the dna is unwrapped from around the nucleosomes, the two strands need to be separated.
