Advantages- sharing workload, pooling resources, bouncing ideas on one another, and enjoyment and motivation of working with other people. Disadvantages- individuals may goof off causing the rest if the group to work harder, times time to report and communicate with other people in the group, and scheduling meetings. Synergy- when the whole group is more successful than each member within it. Groupthink- occurs when members of the group are more concerned with getting the task done than getting it right. Interdependent- when everything that one member does influences the whole group. Norm- expectation of how each member participates in the group. Formal roles- assigned positions to particular members of the group (leader or recorder) Informal roles- just happen through certain interactions that people have within the group (peacekeeper) Task roles- helps groups accomplish goal or purpose. Relationship roles: provide social needs and serve to create teamwork and collaboration. Disruptive roles: when members put their needs over the groups needs.
