Chapter 12: Designing Presentation Aids
12. 1
Knowledge
What are the two sides of visual literacy?
Two sides of visual literacy are:
1. One side that will describe what happens as we consume messages. This includes
reading, interpreting, and listening.
2. The other side will describe what happens when we produce the information we
consumed in the first side. This includes speaking, writing, and creating.
Application
Why is it important for public speakers to be visually literate?
It is important for public speakers to be visually literate because we need to be
able to create accurate messages through speaking or writing. We also need to learn how
to describe what the message is that we’re trying to present to our audience. This will
give us credibility and a great understand of what our topic is. It can be presented through
situations, audiences, and visual aids (not always electronic) to get your message across.

Knowledge
What are the types of presentation aids?
The types of presentation aids are:
1. Written language:
a. These are anything that you can easily incorporate into a PowerPoint. This
includes bullet points, a numbered list, graphs, or tables. While these are
just brief statements, you should deliver the information in full oral
sentences.
2. Data graphs:
a. These are used when you need to present information that has happened
over a wide spread of time. It is basically a picture of numbers that are
displayed visually and are there to help understand the presented
information more clearly. Some examples can be pie graphs, line graphs,
bar graphs, or data maps.
3. Diagrams:
a. Diagrams are visual aids that show the relationships between your ideas.
These can either be used as boxes, lines, arrows, or text. A timeline is a
good example of a diagram.

4. Illustrations/Paintings:
a. These are visuals that will most likely represent modern art. These can be
humorous, or sad, or dark natured, any of these are fine to use as long as it
helps you describe your topic in whatever way is most appropriate.
5. Photographs:
a. Photographs can be of anything you have taken a picture of or have gotten
off the internet. Although, while using the internet, many photos can be
manipulated which will create problems with your presentation.
6. Films/Videos/Animations:
a. These aspects create space for time during your presentation. They allow
the audience to see the information you are presenting in a different kind
of way which will make it more interesting. As long as the clip is short
enough and doesn’t overwhelm your presentation, they can be very
powerful.
7. Objects:
a. Objects are the most concrete visual aid. This allows your audience to see
exactly what you are talking about through your presentation. It must be of
appropriate size and not necessarily “too valuable” or fragile.
Application
Which types best suit your topic, audience, and classroom situation?
I think photographs and a video are the best for my topic because I have so many
pictures from Disney that I took myself over the years. It will give them a sense of reality
because they aren’t just pictures I got off the internet. Also, videos seem to catch the
audience’s attention. It can add even more detail in what I am presenting in a shorter
period of time so I don’t go over my time limit.

Knowledge
What are the various ways you can display your presentation aid?
You can display your presentation aids through:
1. Screen:
a. These include overhead transparencies, computer/video projectors,
computer/television monitors, or video projectors.
2. Paper:
a. This source of display can either be printed through handouts to give to
your audience, posters to show them, or large prints of pictures or
anything you are covering in your topic.
