1st trimester: all major body parts are formed, embryo becomes a fetus, fetus becomes active. 2nd trimester: fetus grows from 14 inches to 1. 5lbs, requires food, oxygen and water. 3rd trimester: gain most weight, respiratory and digestive organs develop. Brown fat special fat rich with blood. Exercise for pregnant women is fine, however it is suggested to avoid contact sports and high impact activities. Lactation: production of milk, begins 3 days post-childbirth. Colostrum: secreted by mammary glands contains antibodies that protect newborns, high in protein. Recommended 6 months of breastfeeding, only 11% of mothers hit that recommendations. Breastfeeding reduces infant infection, diabetes and childhood obesity. Could reduce mothers risk for breast feeding and loss of weight. Teratogen: agent/substance that causes harm to a developing fetus ex: heroin, lead, mercury. Infertility: inability to conceive after trying for a year or more. This can be caused from smoking, alcohol, and obesity.
