Post-impressionism: coined by an art critic in the 20th century, would not consider themselves this term. Each artist went through an impressionist stage, but rejected, in later work, spontaneous scenes and light and space, interested in the formality of painting itself and increasing abstraction. Paul cezanne, mont sainte-victoire, c. 1885-87, oil on canvas. Wasn"t super wealthy, but could provide for him to be a painter. Not from paris, but studied in paris. Fell in with the group of artists inspired by manet, exhibited with the impressionists. Quickly became aware he wasn"t interested in the same things. Nature, still life, fundamentally creating a sense of order. Experimented, give you as little information as possible but still be able to be able to understand what is being presented to you. Limited his subject matter quite a lot: this particular mountain located outside his studio window, not rendering the mountain as it was at that moment in time.
