Document Summary

Fungi have cell walls made up of chitin (like lobster) The main body of a fungus is not the familiar mushroom. All parts of the fugal body are metabolically active. The hyphae are made up of septa, which are individual cells. If there are no septa, its called coenocytic (the nuclei float) They secrete digestive enzymes into their surroundings and absorb the resulting organic molecules. Some fungi are active predators (ex: nematodes are lassoed in by the fungi underground) Produce haploid gametes that fuse to form a zygote. Spores are a common means of fungal reproduction. Hyphae containing nuclei derived from two genetically different individuals. Ploidy in fungus (ploidy= # of chromosomes sets you have) Glomermycota- only 160 known species, 90% of all plants have mychorrhizal relationships with members of this phylum. Important in forming arbuscular mucorrhizae with various plant speices. The plants exchange their sugars with fungi for their nutrients.
