Developmental tasks: specific achievements that people are expected to accomplish in given life period. Havighurst: emphasized developmental tasks that involve establishing oneself in social roles valued by society: initiating adult roles. Erikson: emphasis on tasks that developing strengths in oneself by resolving key psychosocial challenges. Capacity to be involved in intimate, loving relationship requires sufficient sense of self and trust to be willing to reveal yourself to another person. Requires genuine concern for other person"s needs and being able to set own needs aside. Risk of not completing this stage: not developing capacity for intimacy, vulnerable to social isolation. Social clock: social norms that specify age that important life events are expected to happen. Age-irrelevant society: passage through adulthood not governed by strict social timetable. Selection: involves choosing life goals to pursue that are manageable with one"s resources and opportunities. Optimization: using and enhancing one"s resources to pursue goals.
