Piaget sensorimotor behavior = foundations of knowledge. Touch = vital to establishing and maintaining intimacy and infant-parent attachment. Schemas are categories of knowledge used to interpret and understand the world. Creating understanding of the world via sensory, physical, and now perceptual development. Piaget = each infant constructs an understanding of the world based on his or her own actions in the world. Sensorimotor: ages 0-2yrs, reflex base, coordinate reflexes, thinking consists of putting sensory information with motor activity. Infants learn through looking, listening, touching, sucking, mouthing, and grasping: object permanence. Concrete operational: ages 6/7-11/12, more than 1 view point, no abstract problems, consider some outcomes. Formal operational: ages 11/12, think abstractly, reason theoretically, not all people reach this stage. Play usually occurs in the context of social interaction. Cultural beliefs about play affect the nature and frequency of children"s play with parents, siblings, and peers.
