Sensation: the initial process of detecting and encoding environmental energy. Perception: the process of organizing and interpreting sensations into meaningful experiences. Perceptual psychologists study how the brain interprets the information from the sense organs. Plato: developed emanation theory which is an inner fire sends out rays through the eyes that bring back information from the world. He saw cats glowing eyes and thought they could see better in the night because of emanation. Epicurus: developed copy theory which is that objects shed faint copies of themselves, and these enter our eyes and give rise to vision. Illusions wouldn"t work if this theory wasn"t true. Alhazen: arabian scientist who thought the eye worked like a pinhole camera. This is disproved because the pupil is too big and a pinhole camera produces an upside down image. Kepler: an astronomer who demonstrated that the eye uses lenses to create an image. He did this with a dead cat"s eyeball.
