Criminology: an academic field that uses the scientific method to study the nature, extent, cause, and control of criminal behavior. Interdisciplinary: sociology, criminal justice, political science, psychology, economics, engineering, & the natural sciences. What criminologists do: criminal statistics and crime measurement. Valid a measurement that actually measures what it purports to measure, a factual measure. Reliable- a measure that produces a consistent results from one measurement to another. Testing: theories that explain crime: sociology of law/law & society/socio-legal studies. Sex offender registration: megan"s law (1994, zgoba & bachar (2009, develop theories of crime causation & criminal behavior systems. Criminal behavior systems: violence, organized crime, terrorism: penology: punishment, sanctions, & corrections. Penology: the correction & sentencing of known criminal offenders: rehabilitation treatment, social control punishment, victimology: what is the role of the victim. Crime can be controlled through the fear of punishment. Punishment works best when it i severe, certain, & swift.
