ANTH 1 Lecture 19: Ant 1 Notes 19
Document Summary
Gene-based behaviors that increase survival and reproduction in a given environment (ecology) will be inherited by more offspring. Genetic ability to observe, imitate, learn other behaviors. Life history of primates = long childhoods and long lives. Age at aging/death longer female reproductive period, longer life expectancy many offspring = little care. Limited by access to resources for their offspring. Limited by access to females to make offspring. Pick male with the best genes and most resources = baby having best chance for survival. High ranks within the group passed from mother to daughter. Time investment: males can impregnate multiple females at the same time. Physically compete with other males to exclude them from mates. Male-male competition: compete with other males to exclude them from females. Sexual dimorphism (difference in size and shape from females) Infanticide: kill nursing young of potential female mates; usually when a foreign male takes over a harem of females.
