Little difference between elite & commoner burials. Elites lived longer were bigger and had better diet. Only elite had obsidian and polished stone. Wide spread access to obsidian & polished stone. Standard of living declined for the mass of people with increased stratification. Elites may have had an integrative role. The west defines the other: primitive or oriental. Royal tombs fascinate archaeologists and the public (ex. They contain the most beautiful objects of antiquity. They are the most visible and lasting moments of antiquity. They are personal- linked to the life of an individual. They are blatant examples of human exploitation and suffering (on other hand) they are the source of some of the most beautiful art in human history. In some cases people died in funeral rites-work all their lives, some sacrificed to serve royalty in afterlife, for every royal member buried there are thousands who work tirelessly for them in life. 1000"s toiled to build and stock tombs.
