ARTH 25 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Muzio Clementi, Jan Ladislav Dussek, Art Of Europe
Document Summary
The last decade of the 18th century and the first decade of the 19th century proved to be both politically and artistically significant. Countries such as france and america saw the introduction of constitutional representative governments. The holy roman empire came to an end in 1806, and the congress of vienna (1814-15) redrafted national boundaries. This was the period of rewards for previous heroic struggles, and heroism was reflected in all aspects of art, as was national pride. As a part of this national pride, musicians began to take an active interest in folk songs. Many such folk materials were gradually collected and published. Some of these melodies were even incorporated into classical compositions, although an even stringer interest in folk materials was to emerge in the later years of the 19th century. In terms of instruments, both string instruments and pianos came far closer to modern instruments.
