Document Summary

The accompanied art song (as opposed to folk song, popular songs and operatic arias) is one of the most significant developments of the nineteenth century. The german-speaking world led the way with this genre, although there were some art songs coming out of france and russia. The presence of german poetry of high quality had a great influence on the ride of lieder, with the poets goethe, heine and m ller being some of the most important poets. The development of the piano as a reliable instrument with a wide range of dynamics and tonal shadings also contributed to the popular of the art song. In lieder, the singer and the pianists are equals and form a true duo, as opposed to the pianist being only an accompaniment. Great emphasis was placed upon the meaning of the text with the piano often depicting it. Groups of songs related in character and subject are called song cycles of liederkreise.
