Document Summary

Alimentary/gastrointestinal canal: continuous tube through which food passes directly. Oral cavity (mouth) pharynx oesophagus stomach small intestine large intestine. Accessory organs (not part of the alimentary canal but assist in digestion) Teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. Function - take food into body and break it down into its component nutrients so that they can be used by cells. Plays a critical role in fluid, electrolyte and acid-base homeostasis by taking in water and electrolytes via diet and delivering them to the blood. Other functions - ingesting vitamins and minerals, producing hormones and excreting metabolic wastes. Performs six basic processes to carry out these functions: Secretion - digestive organs contain endocrine & exocrine glands that secrete mucus, enzymes, acid, and hormones to aid digestive processes. Propulsion - food and liquids pass from one digestive organ to the next by the process of propulsion. Rhythmic contractions of smooth muscle of alimentary canal - peristalsis + aided by mucus.
