Document Summary

Bulk of the brain consists of: brain tissues, blood supply and csf. Any increase in the bulk of the brain may result to increased icp. Disorders that increase the bulk of the brain tissues are called space- occupying lesions: cerebral tumor, abscess, edema (due to infection or trauma). Factors that may increase the blood supply to the brain are: cerebral hemorrhage, thrombosis, embolism, aneurysm and arteriovenous malformation. The factors that increase the bulk of csf are obstruction to the csf flow caused by brain tumor or ventricular system defects (hydrocephalus), overproduction of csf caused by tumor in the choroid plexus. Note: increase icp is a medical emergency. The cerebral cortex can tolerate hypoxia for 4-6 minutes. Prevent falls that may result to altered loc. If coughing and sneezing cannot be avoided, follow through with open mouth. Limit fluid intake to 1200 to 1500 mls/day to reduce csf production. Mannitol - osmotic diuretic; reduces cerebral edema by increasing urine output.
