COMM 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 32: Expectancy Violations Theory, Tantrum, Falsifiability
Document Summary
All higher levels of thought depend on language. The structure (words, grammar) of the language we use shapes how we understand our environment typically used to distinguish different cultures if language determines perception, can we change perception by changing language. Main focus: how we react when our (nonverbal) expectancies. Expectancy: prediction we have about what people will do (nonverbally) Communicator characteristics: demographics, looks, personality, communication style positive. Violation valence -- positive or negative evaluation. Socially positive behavior positive evaluation from doing more of it than expected. E. g. , unexpected thank you wave = positive evaluation. Socially negative behavior positive evaluation from doing less of it than expected. E. g. , expected a tantrum but didn"t get one = positive evaluation. E. g. , expected obedience, but got tantrum = negative evaluation. If no consensu (ambiguous behavior): then communicator reward valence matters. Communicator reward valence is your previous positive vs negative perception of the communicator/violator. Based on likely rewards/costs from the person.
