System- a group of interacting/interdependent parts that form a complex whole. Two groups of planets occur in the solar system: terrestrial planets-small, dense, rocky planets, mercury, venus , earth ,mars. Gas- giant planets- large, low density, gas-giant planets: jupiter, saturn, uranus and neptune. The solar system is held together by gravity. Big bang nucleosynthesis formed the lightest elements: atomic #1,2,3,4 and 5 (h,he,li,be,and b) Heavier elements are from stellar nucleosynthesis: atomic #s 6-26 (c to fe), elements with atomic numbers 26 and above form during supernova. Mantle-solid rock not magma or lava. (denser) Oxygen and silicon two most important elements in crust. Minerals are the building blocks of our planet. (certain minerals can be made in a lab but they are not actually minerals if they are man made) A state of matter that can maintain its shape indefinitely. Minerals are solids, not liquids or gases. Granite is not a mineral because it does not have an orderly crystalline structure.
