A psychological disorder characterized by persistent expression of several or all of the following symptoms. A diagnosis requires that several of these symptoms be experienced over tiem and significantly impact functioning. 50% of patients diagnosed with an anxiety disorder also experience depression, and nearly all depressed patients experience anxiety. The lifetime prevalence for anxiety disorders as a whole in adults is about 25% There are many types of anxiety disorder in the dsm: phobias, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder. Phobia is classified as an intense fear and avoidance of a specific object or situation. Some phobias are nonspecific including fear of leaving the house or fear of social interactions. Many specific phobias make good biological sense. Treatment is required only if the phobia interferes significantly with life. Gad is characterized by chronic and uncontrollable anxiety, worry and apprehension about the future.
