PSYC 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Subjective Constancy, Classical Conditioning, Ambiguous Image
Document Summary
Perceptual organization - constructing our view of the world. The gestalt principles help us to understand perceptual organization. Gestalt" is a german term that roughly translates to form or pattern. think back to the definition of perception that we learned in this week"s introduction. We now know that perception is how sensory information is actively organized and interpreted by the brain. This is one of the most fundamental principles of perceptual organization. Basically, as we view the world, some objects (the figure) seem to stand out from the background (the ground). The best way to demonstrate the importance of figure and ground is to look at the example of a reversible figure represented in the image to the right. Similarity objects that have similar characteristics are perceived as a unit. In the (a) picture, dots of a similar colour are perceived to belong together to form rows.
