PSYC 3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 26: Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Amygdala, Ovulation
Document Summary
Female reproductive cycle of most primates including humans. Growth of the lining of the uterus. Development of corpus luteum if pregnancy does not occur then menstruation. Estrous cycle female reproductive cycle of mammals other than primates. Same as menstrual cycle except no monthly growth and loss of uterine lining. Sequence of events is controlled by hormones secreted by the pituitary and ovaries. Cycle begins with secretion of gonadotrophins by the anterior pituitary (fsh and lh) Mid-cycle feedback to hypothalamus triggers anterior pituitary to release lh. Ovum enters fallopian tubes and progresses towards uterus. If fertilized by sperm begins to divide and will attach to the uterine wall. If not fertilized corpus luteum stops producing e and p and the lining of the uterus sloughs off. Bc pills are usually a mixture of e and p or e only with a set of low or no hormone pills for one week to allow for menstruation.
