PSYC 6 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Illusory Contours, Fusiform Gyrus, Binocular Disparity
Document Summary
Perceiving objects requires organization of visual information. Perception is result of accumulating sensory data. Proximity: closer two figures are, more likely to group them. Similarity: group figures according to how closely they resemble each other. Continuity: group together edges or contours with same orientation. Completing object behind an occlude, which hides portion from view. Closure- tend to complete figures that have gaps. Illusory contours- perceive contours and cues to depth. Reversible figure illusion- full face or two faces looking at each other. Eastern more holistic, more influenced by background. Hard to not see it after seeing it. Better at identifying faces of own race/ethnic group. Prosopagnosia- inability to recognize faces, but okay with other objects. Fusiform gyrus- region in right hemisphere for identifying faces. Thatcher illusion- more difficult to identify faces upside. Easier to identify anger on mens face, and happiness on. Adaptive advantage because of the nature of male woman"s down crimes and aggression.
