Document Summary

Before descartes, people thought they were superior above animals. Behavior determined by own conscious intent and animals were responding to stimuli in the environment. Descartes: some of our behavior is reflex, automatic to stimuli in the environment. Dualism: human behavior guided by reflexes and conscious. Agrees with descartes, both reflexive and intentional actions. Our behavior is guided by hedonism: we want to avoid aversive events and maximize desirable. Guided by at least one simple rule: avoid bad things and maximize good things which allows us to predict/understand how people learn and behavioral motivations. Evolved mental traits and mechanisms in which we might learn which allows us to understand human behavior through animals. Study animals in order to understand how one learns the exercise and effect relationships in the environment which might be similar to how other animal species/humans learn. Learning an experimental science through relatively rigorous experiments.
