Document Summary
The self is the sum total of people"s conscious perception of their identity as distinct from others (mead). We learn who we are by interaction with others. Our view of ourselves comes not only from our own contemplation of our qualities, but from our impressions of how others see us. Development of self identity: we imagine how we present ourselves to others, we imagine how others evaluate us, we develop feelings about ourselves, based on those impressions. But- since this comes from an imagination of what others are thinking about you, you can develop a self-identity based on incorrect perceptions of how others see you (especially if you are paranoid!) Quick wrap-up: we see ourselves as we think others see us. ( i am who i think you think. The self emerges through the process of 3 steps. Children imitate those around them, especially loved ones that they continually interact with.
