PSYC30800 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Emic And Etic, Relativism, Attachment Theory
Document Summary
Cultural differences: culture: customs, behaviors, attitudes, and values used to identify a population, cultural differences could influence results. Race and ethnicity: race: most often based on skin color, based on real or biological traits, ethnicity: based on ancestry, country of origin, or religion, they overlap easily, we have to remember to separate. Etic vs emic: etic: research finding that appears to be universally true across cultures, emic: a research finding that is only within a given culture. Interpretation paradox: large differences between groups are easy to spot but hard to understand because of the many causes and vice versa. Psychologically- no answer to this question because the definition of race is not clear. In society- very clear, very demonstrated: one-drop rule: a person is racially categorized as a member of a low status group such that is he or she has one of blood from a given group.
