Inclusion
Introduction, Early History, and Middle Ages
• Diversity
o Acceptance and respect
o Each individual is unique we all have our own individual differences
o These can be along dimension of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual
orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious
beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies
o Exploration of these difference in a safe positive, and nurturing
environment
• Disability
o People with disabilities are the nation's largest minority, and the only
one that any person can join at any time
o If you do not currently have a disability, you have about a 20% chance
of becoming disabled at some point during your work life
o People with disabilities cross all racial, gender, educational,
socioeconomic, and organizational lines.
o ADA defines disability as “a physical or mental impairment that
substantially limits one or more major life activities”
• Disability and Cultural Diversity
o Employment circumstances facing minorities with disabilities are
bleak
o It will take the efforts of many organizations and employers to reverse
the negative employment picture for minorities with disabilities
• Factors that lead to High Unemployment
o People with disabilities from culturally diverse backgrounds
experience twice the discrimination experienced by non-disabled
people in the minority community. Both disability and race complicate
the situation
o There is disparity in rehabilitation services provided to minority
persons with disabilities
o Educational opportunities are less available and affordable to
individuals with disabilities from culturally diverse backgrounds
o Inadequate transportation and housing in disadvantaged
communities intensify the employment barriers for minority people
with disabilities
o There is a lack of mentors and role models for minority individuals
with disabilities in the workplace.
o Mainstream job coaching, on the job training and internships are
often not readily available to minority individuals with disabilities.
o Both mainstream and minority communities and religious
organizations tend to overlook their capability to support the
employment of minority individuals with disabilities.
