SPH-T 333 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Technostructure, Adhocracy
Mintzberg Configurations
Design types
• Simple structure – operating core, strategic apex, and middle line but no technostructure or
support staff. CEO is making the decisions because it is a small company it is just the CEO making
decisions. Disadvantages – only works for small company, very CEO driven
• Machine Bureaucracy – has all parts of the organization with high levels of standardization,
formalization, centralized structure. Very efficient structure. Not the best communication in
operating core to the middle line supervisors. Owner is strategic apex, GM is middle line, Players
are operating core (because they can be replaced), technostructure is coaches and scouts
(because they chose where the players play), support staff is team doctors, athletic therapists,
strength coach.
• Divisionalized form – (YMCA) full structures with smaller structures inside the operating core.
YMCA is nation wide but also one YMCA can run independently. Middle line is in charge of
multiple divisions. Divisions can be autonomous and can do well on its own.
• Professional bureaucracy – big operating core, big support staff, small technostructure, normal
strategic apex. Operating core is standardized through training and practicing. Technotructure is
sall eause you do’t have to standardize instead it is standardized through the operating
core.
• Adhocracy – requires a high level of innovation. Middle line, operating core and support staff
are all professional. Internal structure changes frequently, this structure can change very easily
and can promote diversity in groups to think of new ideas
IMPORTANT
Parts of the Organization:
Technostructure: Decide the best way to perform the job (engineer, accountant, planner, researcher)
Support Staff: Outputs do not contribute directly to the core purpose of the organization (legal services,
public relations, clerical work, etc.)
