Document Summary

Behavioral neuroscience: study of the nervous system. Made up of neurons and glial cells. Make up myelin sheath around axons of neurons. Characteristics of the neuron: cell body (soma): contains structures that manufacture proteins and process nutrients. Contains the nucleus: stores genetic material (chromosomes): dendrites: receive messages from other neurons or sensory receptors, axon: an elongated tube that extends from the cell body. Carry information to other neurons, muscles, glands. Vary in length from very tiny to very long: axon terminals: release chemicals which pass the message on to the next neuron, myelin sheath: white fatty coating made of glial cells. Provides insulation that protects the neuron and helps speed up neural transmission. State neurons are in when not transmitting or receiving information. Potassium: higher concentration on the inside of the neuron. A brief electrical impulse that travels down the axon. Produced by the movement of the ions across the membrane of the axon.
