PSY B110 Lecture 11: Sensation and Perception Part Two
Document Summary
Feature detectors: highly specialized neurons in cortex. Each responds to a particular type of visual stimulation. 3 types of cones: each sensitive to certain wavelengths. Color: pattern of stimulation of all three types. Red- green color blindness: person has blue sensitive cones, nut other cones are either all red or green sensitive. Opponent- process theory: at level of ganglion cells and brain. Four basic colors divided into two pairs: red- green, blue- yellow, black-white. After images combine the opponent-process theory with sensory adaption. Bottom up processing: flow of sensory information from sensory receptors to the brain. Top- down processing: draw from knowledge, experiences, expectations, to make meaningful perceptions. Form perception: perceive objects as wholes rather than bits of information. Figure-ground: separate objects of the scene into figures and background figure stands out. Figure- ground reversal: more than one possibility. Law of similarity: tendency to perceive objects of a similar size, shape, or color unit.
