Sociology SOC-R 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 24: Roman Calendar, Unchurched, American Exceptionalism
Document Summary
America: unique in its combination of modernity and religiosity. Most modern nation on the planet and simultaneously, the most religious nation on the planet. Religiosity: levels of religious belief and observance. Modernity (reason, rationality) was presumed to lead to secularization. Free to be any religion, free to join a religion, free to leave a religion, free to not be in a religion. Led to a religious economy where churches and religious leaders innovate. They try to innovate more to attract more people. So they change and add more music, they try to change the way they talked, the certain topics they talk about, modes of dress, and so on. Religious diversity and competition lead to religious innovation. No church vs. church; they"re just trying to attract more people. New religious forms emerge to meet new needs. Starting to look a lot more like europe. Fewer people are religious, fewer people are going to religious events/masses, and so on.
