Document Summary
Ecologists want to know why there are concentrations of species in certain regions and not in others. Growth forms evolved independently in different taxa; however, since selective climatic factors were very similar in the two different locations, they shared very similar characteristics (i. e. cactus and candelabra plant) High density, abundance, and diversity of vegetation. Epiphytes are plants that grow on other plants (usually those that are taller) in an effort to get closer to light. Shed their leaves in response to dry spells: how close vegetation is to the coast is an indicator of how much precipitation it receives. Biomes that are closer to the coast are temperate deciduous. Whereas, as you go further inland, there is not enough rain to support woody vegetation temperate grassland. Therefore, there can be two separate biomes on either side of the mountain: distance from coasts and mountainous regions determine local effects on the development of biomes, i. e.
