SOCI 110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Wage Labour, Fast Fashion, Materialism
Document Summary
Chapter 4&5: what schor has in in mind here is not an exact plan or some kind of step-by-step guide to exactly how plenitude would solve every problem. Nor is she giving us some kind of guide for implementing plenitude. The way forward is people engage in fewer hours of paid employment. Less paid work overall, which frees up time for leisure and other aspects of plentitude. Paid employment is directly associated with carbon emissions: more time spent working= more carbon emissions in all societies. Indirect way- people who work more tend to drive more, eat out more, buy more. People providing for more of their wants and needs in life outside of the formal buisness-as-usual: making stuff for yourself (garden making your own food) Instead of going to work for long hours and getting paid and using that to buy stuff, you go to work for less hours and get paid less but also make your own stuff.
