A. Ecology- ecology refers to the science of interrelationships among organisms and
their environment
B. Ecosystem- an ecosystem refers to a total ecological community, both living and
non-living.
C. Externality, or spillover- the disparity between private industrial costs and public
social costs
D. Free-rider problem- the free-rider problem is the temptation to shirk or avoid
individual responsibility
E. Cost-benefit analysis- cost-benefit analysis is a device used to determine whether
it is worthwhile to incur a particular cost
F. Ecological economics- ecological economics is attempting to expand further the
boundaries of environmental cost-benefit analysis by calculating the value of an
ecosystem of terms of what it would cost to provide the benefits and services it
now furnishes us.
2. Who should pay the bill for environmental cleanup and restoration?
a. There are two answers when the question of who should pay the bill for
environmental cleanup and restoration. The first is those who are responsible for
causing the pollution in the first place ought to pay. The second is those who
stand to benefit from protection and restoration should pick up the tab.
