Document Summary

Atomic structure- protons (+), neutrons (neutral), electron (-) Biochemistry- chemistry of biology, chemistry inside living things. Metabolism- all of the chemical reactions happening in the human body. Chemical reaction: anabolic (synthesis): endergonic (takes energy and stores it)- two pieces and put them together. Reactant product: catabolic (degradative):exergonic (release energy)- large molecule breaking down through chemical reaction. Monomer create polymers (anabolic) dehydration synthesis- monomers are joined by removal of water to create a polymers (catabolic) hydrolysis- monomers are released by the addition of water molecule. Amphipathic- one side of molecule is polar and other side is non polar. Saturated single bond between each carbon vs. Unsaturated- at least one double bond between carbons. Varied functions: structural integrity, immunity, enzymes, muscle, hormones, etc. Proteins are made up of amino acids (building blocks) Dipetitide- two amino stuck together (joined together by dehydration synthesis) Polypetide- chain of amino acids (usually start at about 10) Once you reach about 50 it is called a protein.
