Document Summary

Chemistry: the study of matter and the interactions that it undergoes. Thoughts, emotions, and feelings would not be matter. Physical properties: properties that give characteristics of a material without changing the material (bp, mp, color, density, hardness, ) Physical changes: a change that does not involve a change in the composition of a substance. (change of state, ripping, tearing, etc. )-still chemically the same after as it was before. Chemical changes: a change that involves a change in the composition of the substance (rusting, cooking, combustion (when things blow up or burn), digestion, etc)-not the same material anymore. Element: a pure substance that can not be simplified or broken down into simpler things by means of a chemical reaction. Compound: two or more elements that have chemically combined (ex: water-h2o) Mixture: two or more substances that are not chemically combined (if you need to use a plus sign or commas to write out a formula, they are not chemically combined)
