Culture: a complex system of meanings and behaviors that defines the way of life for a given group of society, culture is learned. Cultural universals- things that every (or most) cultures have: family, religion, language, art. Ethnocentrism: judging other cultures by your cultures standards. Culture relativity: attempting to appreciate other groups way of life within the context that they exist. Things in a society that you can touch, feel, and taste. Ex: jewelry, art, technology, cars, weapons, literature: non-material culture. Things in a society that you wanted touch. Ex: beliefs, values, language, gestures: language. We must think of a phenomenon before we can name it. Estimated 5k languages (chinese being the largest amount of language speakers: subculture and counterculture. Groups whose values and norms differ to some degree, but you"re still attached to the dominant culture. Create values that purposefully go against the dominant culture: media. 42% of households have televisions that are continuously on.
