PSYC 11762 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Social Desirability Bias, Health Psychology, Dependent And Independent Variables
Document Summary
Read over the rst two pages of the study guide, everything else is just supplementary ask questions and let the data supply the answers. Then ask new questions based on the answers (results) to the old questions. Vocabulary and concepts population- entire group of interest. Not very practical - turns out not necessary. What makes a good sample must be representative. Data collection techniques observations - can be natural setting or laboratory - watch and record. Cons: its expensive (time and money), behavior changes when watched, cant see everything survey and interview- ask on paper or in person. Pros: cheaper, quicker, can ask about anything (thoughts, rare behaviors, feelings) Cons: people lie (social desirability bias - trying to look good), maybe people aren"t self aware. Cons-not whats probable, will it apply to others?, no info on causation. Descriptive research- what is out there learning about a variable (how much, how often)
