Document Summary

Biol 150 principles of molecular & cellular biology. The discussion then turned to ways in which the amplified dna can be used. Sequencing the amplified dna is done in orderto identify a gene, or the source of a sample, or a person whose dna it is. In addition, the amplified dna can be used to alter the genome of a cell or an organism. The amplified dna can be put inside an organism (a process called transformation that we did not look at in detail). In bacteria, the amplified dna, and the bacterial dna are both usually cut first by restriction enzymes. As you learned in lab, these enzymes cut dsdna at specific unique palindrome sequences, and leave ends that can base-pair to other dna cut with the same enzyme. The amplified cut dsdna will then anneal to the cut bacterial dna, to insert that amplified piece of dna into the bacterial dna.
