A disorder in psychological processes involved in understanding or using language which may be manifested in problems with listening, thinking, speaking, reading, writing, spelling, or doing mathematical calculations. Includes: perceptual disabilities, brain injury, minimal brain dysfunction, dyslexia, developmental aphasia (gain correct word) Iq scores are unreliable because of reading ability. A wait to fail method of identification. About 5% of students aged 6 to 17 identified. Genetic, central nervous system dysfunction, toxins, medical factors (premature birth) Interindividual variation: no two kids are the same. Intraindividual variation: struggles in certain areas and strengths in others. Spoken language (syntax, semantics/word meanings, social use of language)
